February 10, 2008 – Gloria Aciro Laker is the winner of our latest reporting competition in Uganda. Her winning report looks at how child mothers and former child soldiers who remain in displaced people’s camps are trying to rebuild their lives. Gloria is a reporter for Radio Mama in Gulu, northern Uganda.

Gloria’s descriptive passages and use of ambient sound really take us to the camp and make it come alive,” says Julia Crawford, Project Director of the Communicating Justice project. “She uses a good mix of voices, including real people in the camp. The listener is never bored and is left with something to think about. Well done Gloria!”

In second place is a report by Michael Wambi of Vision Voice, looking at the plight of landmine victims in northern Uganda. David Okurut of Kyoga Veritas FM in Soroti and Julian Amutuhaire of  KFM in Kampala tied for third place. David’s report looks at problems facing displaced people in the north, while Julian’s looks at the issue of reparations for war victims.

All four will shortly receive prizes. Gloria receives a portable computer with sound editing software and a Marantz digital recorder, while Michael receives a portable computer. David and Julian each receive a Marantz recorder.
